The board of directors of VI has decided to fund a pilot project proposed by a student and his adviser at the Polytechnic University of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, West Africa in collaboration with the Institute of the Environmental and Agricultural Research (INERA) which is the research organization of the Burkina Faso government. The project will address the issue of the sustainability of soil and water conservation techniques and is entitled: “Study of the dynamics and methods of managing pastures reclaimed by the development of water and soil conservation techniques in the Sahel”. In the past, soil and water conservation techniques taught by development organizations have often led to a temporary recovery of degraded rangeland. However, these lands quickly become degraded once again. The project aims to address this problem by empowering farmers, by giving them the knowledge and tools to monitor their communal pasturelands. By observing the species composition of their pastures, the farmers will be able to monitor the ecological progression of deterioration/rehabilitation and adjust their grazing strategies accordingly. The project will establish farmers' field schools in the northeast Burkina Faso near the Niger border so that farmers can be taught with a hands-on approach to research.
