Board of Directors
What is the Board of Directors?
VI is governed by a Board of Directors (the “Board”). The Board is a group of people who have agreed to accept responsibility for governing the organization. The Board's primary role is to uphold the public trust (also called “fiduciary responsibility”). The Board accomplishes this by ensuring that the rights and privileges of a non-profit, tax exempt organization is not abused and that the non-profit carries out its purpose for the public benefit.
Although not usually involved in day-to-day activities, the Board is responsible for managing the organization and making key decisions. It is specifically responsible for guiding the overall planning and strategy of VI, adding or removing board members, setting policy, authorizing programs, projects, and significant financial transactions, hiring or firing staff with the approval of the Executive Director, engaging auditors and other professional services, and overseeing fund raising activities.

How do I become a Board member?
VI is always seeking people who believe in its mission and are willing to serve on its Board. If you are interested in possibly becoming a Board member we recommend that you take the following steps:
- Read VI's literature to be sure you have a clear understanding on VI's mission, values, strategies, and operational principles. The best place to start is by reading VI's Organizational Plan.
- Read specifically the document entitled, HowTheBoardOperates by clicking on this link. This document also includes what is expected of Board members.
- Be sure to get answers for any and all questions you may have about Verbree International by sending an email to info@verbree.org with your questions. If you entitle the message something to the affect of "How to Become a Board Member" it will most likely be forwarded on to the Executive Director and you can communicate with him directly.
- Ask the Executive Director or an existing Board member to consider you for nomination (this is usually just a formality).
- If nominated, the Board will schedule a 10 minute interview with you either in person or by teleconference during the next Board meeting.
- The Board of Directors will discuss privately and cast its vote. You will then be notified of the results.
