Classifications of Involvement

The operations of the Organization are conducted by a variety of Directors, Employees, Volunteers or Interns, the combinations of which are hereinafter referred to as Staff.

Before taking on their responsibilities, all new staff and the Organization's Executive Director or Board President must sign an agreement specifying the terms and duration of their commitment.

Directors

A Director is a person who is an official member of the Organization's Board of Directors. The Organization ensures that no more than 20% of the Board of Directors are considered "disqualified" persons. A "disqualified" person includes, but is not limited to, an officer of the Organization or a family member of an officer or director. Directors are not compensated for their services with the exception of possible disqualified persons who are Employees. Directors will receive reimbursement, however, for certain expenditures pertaining to trips to the field for monitoring and evaluation or auditing, conferences, meetings, or training.

Volunteers

Volunteers are those performing work for the Organization without receiving compensation. A Volunteer will be provided food and lodging, reimbursement of expenses, or a per diem or any combination thereof if he/she chooses to volunteer away from his/her place of residence.

The Organization does not permit Organization Employees to participate as Volunteers for the Organization.

Interns

A sub-classification of a Volunteer is an Intern. Interns may perform the activities of other Employees, however, they are unpaid. The Organization may accept internships under the conditions that there is a specific written curriculum and that the program is supervised by a qualified instructor approved by the Organization's Board of Directors or a sending educational institution.

Employees

The Organization will compensate Employees in accordance with the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) for work performed while in the U.S. However, the Organization will not necessarily follow the guidance of the FLSA for setting Employee wages while working abroad. The power purchasing parity of the host country will be taken into account when establishing compensation. Wages may also be reduced to reflect lodging and food or per diems if provided by the Organization.

The Organization defines two subclassifications of employees, Exempt and Non-exempt, which identifies their length of commitment, expected activities, and pay structure.

Exempt Employees

Exempt Employees include long-term employees of the Organization considered to be professionals including executives and administrative personnel. The expected term of an Exempt Employee ranges from greater than two years to indefinite. An Exempt Employee earns a salary that complies fully with the FLSA (a minimum of $455/week) while performing work within the U.S. An Exempt Employee may be paid a different rate while performing work outside of the United States as previously described. Both rates must be set forth in their contract.

Non-exempt Employees

Non-exempt Employees are typically short-term employees of the Organization. The Organization will pay a Non-exempt Employee at least minimum wage (the greater of the state and federal defined wages) for services performed within the U.S. and in accordance with the FLSA. VI will typically pay a living stipend to Non-exempt Employees working abroad. Both rates must be set forth in their contract.
